This giveaway is now closed. Congratulations Natalie "M-A-D Momma". I am emailing you now.
I'm doing a giveaway this week, but it's not your average giveaway.
I'm happy for the Spunky Coconut to promote my fellow authors and food bloggers, and their cool books. It's good attention for the people and things I like, and I hope it's of interest to my readers.
Food companies, however, have really latched on to the whole blog review/giveaway thing. It puts their products in front of thousands of people, while their only expense is the cost of sending that $10 box of whatever. I recently learned that 70% of corporate free samples go to blogs these days. Every week my inbox is full of random companies offering review samples, stuff to giveaway, or they just want to announce their corporate news. Much of the time the publicity person emailing me hasn't bothered to figure out what my blog is about. They just paste my name at the top of a form letter and move on to the next blogger. These impersonal emails are tiring, especially when their product is inappropriate for my site and my readers. These I politely decline.
Sometimes the companies approaching me are downright rude. For instance, one company asked me to stop linking to their competitors, offering me a few samples as payment. Another company sent me a box of stuff (half of which wasn't gluten-free). When I told them I wasn't going to do a review they gave me a sarcastic, "Enjoy that FREE stuff we sent you." It's hard not to feel like most companies are just exploiting bloggers for advertising that is practically free. The whole thing has made me feel discouraged.
My husband, Andy, had this great idea that it would be nice to do a giveaway without promoting any companies. So, that's what I'm doing. The mystery box in the photo above contains four food-related things that I bought myself, and one yummy homemade treat (made by yours truly). It's my gift to one of you, my readers.
I hope to inspire a trend among bloggers. Lets all stop doing product reviews and giveaways—or as I've now come to think of it—free advertising for companies. Lets start a trend of mystery boxes—lovingly prepared homemade treats, and personally selected products. Our readers will appreciate it more, and companies will get the message that it's time to stop taking advantage of us.

«Oldest ‹Older 1 – 200 of 374 Newer› Newest»Hi and good morning from the UK. I would love to have your free box of goodies. I have been a coeliac for many years and it is great to have contact with others worldwide. My name is RUTH Male or @pinky26 on here.
I appreciate all the work that you put into this blog...and the mystery box! Great idea!

I found your blog from a pin on pinterest after searching for gluten free recipes. I only found out about all of my food allergies two weeks ago, so I am deep in the process of re-learning how to eat and cook. Love your stuff!
The mystery box sounds pretty fun! Thanks for the giveaway.

Awesome idea, by the way! I get tired of seeing product reviews. I did them myself for a while, but it has become a bit ridiculous.

Would love to discover what's in the box!
Just found your blog and had to sign up. Looking for some easy gluten-free, vegetarian recipes with little or no sugar.
What an absolutely cool idea!!!
Yay am I the first to comment? Cool, that's never happened before. Kelly, this is Hope in Jacksonville, FL.! Btw I tried emailing you back but kept getting it bounced back, don't know why? Anyways, exciting giveaway! Thanks for offering. Hope Friese hopefrees@live.com
Mystery Box?! Cool!! I'll keep my fingers crossed!! Thanks for a great site and the awesome recipes (I've already tried a few at home and the hubby and kids have loved them!).
This is a fabulous idea!!!

Sounds like a great plan to me, I wonder what is inside! ~ Liz Win
Oh what a cool idea! I don't want to leave my full name or email (my real name) in a public space though.
What a great idea, Kelly! I've been feeling that way for a while now. It's time bloggers understood that they are providing a great platform for companies, and should be remunerated accordingly. What magazine, for instance, would give free editorial content to a product just because they received a sample? And, like you, I have begun to receive requests from companies that obviously haven't read my blog at all. Argh! I love this concept--wish I lived in the States so I could enter! :)
Love this idea... Although I'm a newbie blogger and have no companies knocking down my door with freebies, this is great to bear in mind for the future.
Love that you're doing this, such a fantastic idea! Thanks! Megan Buer - meganbuer@yahoo.com

ah, i love this idea!
This is wonderful! I have enjoyed your blog soooo much and now I may get a prize - Whoot!!
I also agree that it is a shame for companies to exploit the blogging community... Thank you for being a voice or reason!
Bless you!

Kelly,
Like you, I receive so many solicitations to do reviews and product give-aways, of which, I always decline. I've never been on that bandwagon and it always amazes me when I get an email from a marketing firm that starts with, "We love your blog." Then they go on to suggest something that obviously, if they read my blog, they'd know whatever it was they're selling is not something I'd promote. I often reply with a very nice, "Thank you, but I don't do free advertising on my blog." =)
I LOVE your idea of a mystery box. We used to do "mystery" nights with our kids when they were small. We'd pick something fun and build it up for a month or so. Mystery nights (boxes, giveaways) bring out the "KID" in all of us. I think your idea is most awesome and I will follow in your footsteps and do this sometime. In the meantime, I'll be sharing your mystery all over blog-land! =)
Thanks for a great idea, Spunky!
Melissa

What a fabulous idea and generous of you to do this. Of course I would love the mystery gift, but even if I don't, it's always a pleasure to read your blog.
Deirdre P
My daughter and I go to your site and cookbook first whenever we plan our cooking. Your recipes are the best! Would love your mystery box. Nothing better then waiting for a mystery package!
Fabulous idea, Kelly! I do love product reviews of things bloggers actually use often in their lives, but it is tiring to see reviews of things people just got to review. Much like firing writers and having reality shows, the corptocracy is always looking to make more and more money at the expense of many of the good things in life. I cannot wait to see what you've gathered into that pretty mystery box!
What a wonderful idea!! IF we promote it should be the companies we love the most and have become important and changed our cooking. zmy personal opinion but I love you mystery box idea! So intrigued!
noelle kelly noellsky (at) gmail (dot) com
Hi Kelly! I do not have issues with dairy, gluten nor am I celiac. However, I eat "Spunky Style" because I simply love the recipes. I love to bake and eat, but to know I am eating good quality/healthy foods, that has been life-changing for me. I can't thank you enough for all you and Andy do with your consistant inspiration :)
Spunky Coconut we LOVE you in our home! Your recipies are delicioso! My favorite is the Chocolate Chip Cookies, oh yeah, they're a Big hit! I've been following your blog for about 2 years now. I first learned about Vanilla Creme Stevia from you, it's a Staple in my pantry! :) Thank you for all you do and your family is so sweet.

What a wonderful idea! I'm with you on the companies bullying bloggers into product placement--which is why I won't do reviews on my blog. The mystery box is a really inspired idea!
After recently losing 35 lbs of postpartum baby weight (so what if my youngest is 9?? lol), I love that I can still eat your recipes and feel decadent (and not gain back any weight!). Thanks for all you do!

I love the idea behind this giveaway. :) It's sneaky how companies try to get seen by giving free samples. Not sure how many Seeks there are out there, but you can at least reach me here: sneakfuzz/at/hotmail
Awesome idea. Those nasty PR people are getting paid pretty decent salaries for you to do their job for them. For you to turn it around and gift your readers and from your own resources is even more amazing. It's one of the reasons your blog is so popular. Bloggers like you gift stalkers like me every time we open our mailboxes. laurel vanblarcum at sbc global dot com

Your blog is great and I read it constantly.

I hear ya on the impersonal form letters! That gets very tiresome. I don't mind sharing products with my readers that a) I truly love, and b) I think THEY will truly love, and c) from a company I actually respect, but those kinds of giveaways seem to be dwindling in the blog world. I love your Mystery Box idea!

Wish your homemade goodies could make their way up north to me!

What a wonderful and REFRESHING idea! I love your blog and cookbooks and would rather hear your recommendations for products or food items because you've found that they're truly awesome than because they were just given to you by a company that isn't invested in your cause. :)

What a wonderful idea! I'm tired of how blogging is becoming more about product reviews for corporate promotional purposes than people writing about things they're truly passionate about. It's great to see you being proactive and trying to change things!
Halil Atkins
What a sweet idea! I usually don't even bother to read the reviews on food blogs, but it's less because the practice is starting to get a little shady on the part of the manufacturers and more because I can't eat the products anyway. But I can't wait to hear what's in the mystery box whether it's me who gets the privilege of opening it or not!
Many thanks for your useful blog, from one coconut-nut to another-

Beautiful photo. Beautiful Idea. Beautiful you. Thank you. We adore so many of your recipes. One of our top faves is the Creamy Italian Dressing. We add fresh basil and more water to make it thinner and the kids use it as a dip for red tipped lettuce, romaine lettuce, tomatoes, their fingers...anything really!! It's great to see my three yr old eating salad with your dressing dripping from his chin!! So delish!!

I'm a pretty (okay, REALLY) small potatoes blog, and would it would likely make my day if any sort of company would approach me with giveaway stuff (though that's not the aim or in line with my ideals- but it would still be exciting!) but hearing your experiences with the big companies definitely makes me not want to "go big". I love this idea; It's almost like "buying local" since we are getting homemade treats! Or buying from Etsy! I'm completely on board with the idea of cutting off the free advertising for corporations and bringing it back to being about the small things. Love it!
This is an excellent idea. It would be a real treat to win and see what goodies you have chosen to share.
Thanks for sharing,
Holly Ellerton

What a great idea!! Hopefully you are starting a new trend. :) allison.toth@gmail
What a great idea Kelly! Thank you for changing the giveaway world one box at a time! Who wouldn't want something you actually crafted in your kitchen? I have often wished I lived next door and could be a taste tester for you!! Thanks for the oppotunity!
What a great idea! We have a blog http://dancinginnutflour.blogspot.com/ but it's only recently up and running. So as newbies, we appreciate the heads-up about the marketing! So far, our blog is our story about raising our daughter with autism, who will be 20 yrs old on Jan 27th! I published her story in book form in 2002. When we update her story and tell how the Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)changed her life over the past 7 years, we'll be adding recipes and links to other sites with great resources, such as yours! BTW, thanks for the Chai Granola recipe in December. Everyone loved it as a Christmas gift. It's not SCD legal, so our daughter couldn't eat it, but we who are "only" gluten-free and dairy-free LOVE it!
Now it's not a giveaway, it's a gift! It's wrapped, isn't it? Thanks for your presence and your presents.

Great idea! Sounds like fun!
What a marvelous idea! While it's lovely that there are so many giveaways online now, I completely agree that big food companies are probably using this as cheap advertising. Way to make this more fun and fair :)
